Sports Betting: The A-List

Friday, June 28th, 2013

It’s always nice to be in good company and, as part of the betting community, you certainly are. There are a multitude of first-grade celebrities who love the thrill of a sports bet and all the more for the sense of risk-taking. At Panda Sweeps, we’ve taken the liberty of providing a shortlist of the biggest names in betting and some of their highlights (and a couple of lowlights too).

50 Cent

Fiddy’s a notorious gambler with many successes and failures to his name, but some bets have been especially cheeky. In 2012, the rapper made a pretty hefty bet on the NFC Championship in favour of Giants. The rather lucky 50 appeared to have Lady Luck on his side that day, bringing in a veritable fortune of 500k as a result of the Giants win. Here’s a very depressing picture of all of Fiddy’s fiddies.

George Clooney

If you’ve seen the Ocean’s trilogy (and if you care about gambling at all, you really should have), you’ve seen George Clooney make some pretty hefty cinematic bets. And we can assure you this passion for a wager doesn’t end when the camera stops rolling. Not only did Clooney attempt to build a Vegas casino by the name of Las Ramblas in a tribute to his love of gambling culture, but he also engages in a little mischievous betting of his own from time to time. On the Leatherheads set, he played actor John Krasinski in a game of basketball in the name of glory and $1000 – Clooney emerged the victor, wiping his head with $100 bills, asking “is it hot in here?”, the cheeky boy.

Birdman

Rapper and producer Birdman loves a little bet from time to time, and occasionally a pretty big one. 2011 saw him bet $2m on the Miami Heat in the NBA Championships. After a promising start, the Heat regretfully lost out 4-2 to the Dallas Mavericks, costing Birdman rather a lot of dollar. But he’s a big man and hasn’t been tainted by the experience, continuing to make some heavy sports bets in the last couple of years – his love of the game is still very much alive and profitable.

Snoop Dogg

Not only does Snoop have two Gs, he also has rather a lot more than that. Enough to justify him wagering $20k on the 2010 NBA Finals without so much as a sharp intake of breath. The wager (against actor Donnie Wahlberg and UFC President Dana White) supported the Lakers’ victory over the Boston Celtics in this Finals game – a game from which Snoop emerged victorious. The beautiful dee-oh-double-gee donated his winnings to charity, demonstrating the glorious inner morality of sports betting.

Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen is undoubtedly a rich man, having scraped in millions of dollars per episode of Two and a Half Men and being subsequently declared 2010’s highest paid actor in television. For this reason, it’s unsurprising that Sheen would pursue any and all of his betting urges. Sheen claims that his biggest bet put an easy million dollars in the balance on Pacquiao versus De La Hoya in the Dream Match of 2008, to Sheen’s ultimate satisfaction. Not only did he gamble personally and somewhat actively until his retirement from sports betting in 2012, but Sheen even established his own sport-specific gambling site, by the name of Winning Fantasy Sports to express his love for the game.
