Three in a row for Alex Dowsett
Wednesday, June 26th, 2013
Alex Dowsett has gone on to win his third consecutive British title at the National Time Trial Championships 2013 in Stewarton, Scotland. It made for an impressive finish after suffering some setbacks early on in the race. It was estimated that 3,500 people turned out to watch the event, by far the most for the British Time Trial Championships in recent history.
The 24 year-old cyclist crashed in the opening kilometres of the race. He landed heavily on his left-hand side and even required a bike change. It was thought to be a tyre malfunction just a few corners into the first lap of the championship race. Dowsett seemed confused about the problems he suffered during the race:
“I’m not entirely sure what happened [with the crash] but I’ve got a feeling that there might have been a little problem with the front tyre. I cut my hands and that made it difficult to grip the bars. My elbow hurt too but I just had to grin and bear it.”
Despite these setbacks and several cuts and scrapes, Dowsett was able to beat reigning National 100 champion Matt Bottrill and fellow competitor Ben Swift by 21 seconds. The champion’s winning time was one hour, two minutes 30 seconds over the 49.2km course. Alex Dowsett is part of the UCI ProTeam Movistar Team after leaving Team Sky where he was a former team-mate of Bradley Wiggins, the 2012 Tour de France winner and Olympic time trial gold medallist. Dowsett left for Movistar last year to pursue more Grand Tour opportunities.
