Saturday, April 5th, 2014
The Grand National is upon us! First held in 1839, the Grand National has long been established as one of horse racing’s biggest events. Held annually at Liverpool’s illustrious Aintree racecourse, the race attracts horse racing fans from all over the world. This year’s Grand National is set to attract over 150,000 racegoers over the three day event.
Some come to mingle with the social and sporting elite, some to soak up the atmosphere, and then there are the hardcore racing fans. This diverse mix of attendees combines to create the colossal spectator event that is the Grand National.
Yesterday saw Ladies Day, complete with ridiculous and at times unsettling headwear. Saving the best for last, the main event – the Crabbie’s Grand National Race is held today on Saturday 5th April. The anticipation in the air for the big day is palpable – over 600 million people around the world will tune in to watch the big race broadcast live. The main event’s set to take place at 4:15pm – so make sure you get your sweepstakes organised and your bets in early, and tune in to watch the big race!
40 horses will race on the Aintree course – which is 4 miles and 31/2 furlongs long – jumping 30 fences in two circuits along the way. No easy feat. It’s not all bad news for the jockeys, though – this year’s prize money is expected to top £1 million for the first time in the race’s history.
The Grand National is a notoriously challenging race and the jumps on the circuit are equally infamous. Whatever the outcome, it’s guaranteed to be an action-packed weekend.
