How to Place a Bet on Golf

Like many other sports, golf has its own set of rules when it comes to making wagers. If you’re new to the world of golf, or have simply never had the courage to put your money where your mouth is, here’s a quick guide to four types of golf bets.
Outright Winner
A straightforward bet where you declare who you think will win the tournament. This is the most popular type of bet and a great place for beginners to start. When deciding on your golfer, you will be presented, firstly, with the individuals and, secondly, by ‘The Field’. Those that receive individual odds are typically the heavy hitters like Tiger Woods, Phil Michelson, Fred Funk, etc. The Field refers to any other golfer that hasn’t been given any individual odds.
Golfer Matchups
A matchup is a head-to-head wager, pitting one player against another. Betting companies will usually offer this bet with one competitor as the favourite and the other as the underdog. By choosing one player over another, you are betting that this player will finish at least one position higher than his opponent at the end of the tournament.
Group Matchups
Similar to golfer matchups, a group bet involves betting on one golfer to position higher than everyone else in a chosen group. This bet typically has higher pay-outs than head-to-head wagers but is harder to win, as your chosen player must beat everyone else in the pool.
Future Bet
People tend to make larger wagers on a future bet at the start of the season. The oddsmakers will establish odds for future events and the bettor can try to predict how their chosen player is going to perform.
Example:
How many Majors will Phil Michelson win this season?
0 – 8/1
1 – 6/1
2 – 5/1
3 – 17/1
4 – 30/1
If I think Michelson will win three majors this season, I can place a bet of £100 to potentially win £1700.
