Federer defeats Zverev

Roger Federer defeated German challenger Mischa Zverev in just 39 minutes in Halle, Germany. His German opponent ranks at 156 in comparison to Federer being the world number three. Federer has now secured his place in the Gerry Weber Open grass-court tournament semi-finals. The final score was 6-0 6-0, Federer’s second “double bagel” of his career. The first of these was against Argentina’s Gaston Gaudio in the semi-final of the Masters Cup in Shanghai, 2005.
The 31 year-old Swiss player was dominant from start to finish, allowing Zverev just seven points on his own service games during the first set, which was over in just 20 minutes. Federer did not lose a single game in his rise to quarter-final victory, appearing to cruise easily through the match. Federer has won a total of 902 games throughout his tennis career. He commented after the match:
“It’s not something which is easy to do. You never go into a match aiming for that score, I was very surprised that it happened today, especially on grass. I think it is disappointing for a serve and volley player to go down like this. It shows also how easy it is to hit passing shots or returns today. I hope he doesn’t take it too badly, I just had a pretty easy time picking up his serve and I must have made a ton of returns. I feel sorry for Mischa. This is not really how I want to win my games; it is a bit uncomfortable.”
He will now play either his good friend Tommy Haas, who beat him in last year’s final, or France’s Gael Monfils. If Federer is successful at gaining at a title at this years’ Gerry Weber Open, it will be his sixth from this event. It is certainly his favourite warm-up for Wimbledon and features heavily in his preparation for the grand tournament. Four of his Wimbledon titles have come after triumphs in Halle. Federer will be defending his seventh Wimbledon title later this month, which he won last year after beating Britain’s own Andy Murray in the final round.
