BetFair Super Saturday: The Favourites and the Long Shots

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

The racing fraternity is busy gearing up for one of the season’s biggest races. Betfair Super Saturday will be held at the racecourse in Newbury on Saturday, 8th February. Horse racing fans will be treated to an afternoon of quality racing with some of the UK’s best known jockeys.

Current favourites for the Betfair Hurdle on Saturday include Irving, Irish Saint, Cheltenian and Dell’ Arc. These race cards can sometimes throw up a shock so for any race goer looking for a long shot, then First Avenue is 50/1, Sky Khan is 40/1 and Zuider Zee stands at 33/1.

With the race less than a week away the favourites have already been lined up. Irving, trained by Paul Nicholls, looks set to be one of the stars of Betfair Super Saturday if recent performances are anything to go by. The bay gelding arrived from Germany a short while ago and has already put up some impressive performances.

Irish Saint, Al Ferof and Sam Winner are among the others that Paul Nicholls has trained ready for the race on Saturday. Irish Saint, a five-year-old bay gelding put up a superb performance at Ascot early this year, and this should bode well for Saturday. Al Ferof, a grey gelding is certainly one to look out for; the grey gelding has previously won at the Winter Bumper at Newbury. The Paul Nicholls’ trained horse has also registered a grade 3 win at the Paddy Power Cheltenham Gold Cup and had a grade 2 win at Ascot In 2013.

Sam Winner will be another entrant from Paul Nicholls. The bay gelding hasn’t had too many wins – so far just registering one at the 2010 Prestbury juvenile hurdle – but perhaps Saturday will be Sam Winner’s day – and the gelding is long due a win.

The Other Favourites

Some of the favourites for Betfair Super Saturday have already been highlighted. For this section we will look at some of the other potential winners that have slightly longer odds.

Cheltenian

Cheltenian made his return to the sport in 2013. The eight-year-old bay gelding performed well at Uttoxeter and now he is all set to make his handicap hurdle debut at Newbury. Cheltenian is trained by P.J. Hobbs and is owned by R.S Brookhouse.

The Outsiders

Every race has an outsider, but sometimes they surprise us all. Here are some of this year’s Betfair Super Saturday outsiders.

Sky Khan

Trained by R.C. Guest and owned by The Unique Partnership, the five-year-old bay gelding has had several wins, but doesn’t have good odds of making an impression at Newbury on Saturday.

First Avenue

First Avenue has been given the longest odds. However, the horse has caused an upset before. The nine-year-old bay gelding was only given 20/1 in the Paddy Power Imperial Cup, but managed to surprise everybody.

Weather Conditions

With the poor weather conditions that have affected the UK in recent weeks, it is hoped that this won’t affect the going at Newbury.
