Thursday, September 5th, 2013

With the Australian Spring Racing Carnival now in full swing, we at Panda Sweeps couldn’t be more geed up – so we’ll be keeping you up-to-date on all the best, most exciting events and giving you the lowdown on all the smartest betting options. And coming up on Saturday September 14th is the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes Day.

A Group 2 weight-for-age race over 1600m, the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes was originally known as the Glenroy Stakes when first run in 1949, and later the Feehan Stakes between 1984 and 2004. The current name, however, came about in honour of Malaysian businessman Dato Tan Chin Nam, as thanks for his significant contribution to Australian racing.

The event takes place at Moonee Valley racecourse, which, later in the season, also hosts the Spring Racing Carnival’s second highest paying race − the world famous W.S. Cox Plate. With prize money of $500,000 (approximately £287,000), the Chin Nam Stakes is a major event in its own right, but is also keenly followed by racing fans and bettors for its strong track record of highlighting future champions of the more lucrative W.S. Cox Plate. In total, eight horses have gone on to win the Cox Plate following victory in the Chin Nam Stakes, including Might Mare in 2000, Northerly in 2001 and, most recently, El Segundo in 2007.

Chin Nam has also been a solid indicator of form for other races in the Spring Racing Carnival, with Makybe Diva coming second at Moonee Valley in 2004 and 2005, before going on to win the Melbourne Cup in both years. For those looking to bet on Chin Nam itself, the preceding Memsie Stakes Day has often been a good event to consider. 15 of the last 21 Chin Nam winners have also competed in the Memsie Stakes, including last year’s Chin Nam winner, Happy Trails, who came second in that year’s Memsie Stakes. With that in mind, this year’s Memsie Stakes winner, Atlantic Jewel, runner-up, Ferlax and third-placer, Super Cool, are all worth keeping an eye on.
